After the capital, Lugo, Monforte de Lemos is the second largest town in the province. Today Monforte is a major service centre, the hub of the local region and the most important commercial centre south of Lugo.
The town has a wide variety of good quality shops and services where visitors can find everything they need for a comfortable stay.
The growth of tourism in the Ribeira Sacra has created new opportunities of work within the service sector with the opening of various related businesses including hotels and restaurants.
Monforte’s location at the centre of the Ribeira Sacra, the presence of the Wine Centre of the Ribeira Sacra, its famous historic centre and the amenities the town provides have made it the perfect base for exploring the surrounding areas.
In addition most of Monforte is built on the plain so it is flat – a rarity in Galicia. This makes it a great place for easy walks, particularly by the river, and for gentle bicycle rides. Many of the cafes, bars and restaurants have outdoor terraces and there are many public parks and recreation areas to enjoy and relax in.
For many years the river Cabe, which runs through the centre of Monforte, was neglected but with various clean-up schemes and the creation of riverside parks and gardens it is once again being enjoyed by both residents and visitors. The walk along the river banks through the centre of the town is a popular highlight..
