The River Cabe

THE RIVER CABE

Multiple factors make up the character of the city of Monforte de Lemos; its past, its patrimonial wealth, its links with the railway, its role as the main town of the region,..and the river that runs through it, the Cabe.

In the Ribeira Sacra there are three main rivers the Miño, Sil and Cabe. The steep terraced banks characterise the spectacular landscapes on these three “ribeiras” (river banks) a long with the images of the flowing water of the rivers. The Cabe flows through Monforte and creates a natural space that both locals and visitors can enjoy. There are walking paths on both sides of the river in the city centre.

The Club fluvial is a popular place with locals when the weather is hot, here you can enjoy leisure activities and go swimming in the various pools.

After the Cabe flows through the city, it continues on towards the parish of Piñeira. Here a walkway has been created along the riverside that both locals and visitors can take advantage of to practise outdoor sports and to go for a walk. Throughout the year the Cabe gives us picturesque images, of little river mists, of the autumn colours reflected in its waters, of the frosts which when they are heavy cause the river to freeze over. In summer the Cabe is a place to meet and pass the time, a special space to enjoy the bar terraces that line its borders and for watching the boats on the river.

Boats can be hired during the summer and these are always a draw for families and groups of friends.

Boat hire: From 15th June to 15th of September

Place of hire: Parque dos Condes

The boats are recreations of traditional river passenger boats and have a capacity of 6-8 people.

The river Cabe is also of importance for its Medieval bridge that every year during the Patron Saint festival in August is lit up by fireworks over the river.
